Cell phones have become the only phone in 26.5% of American households according to a new study by the National Center for Household statistics.
The percentage of wireless only households increased in every state since last year with Arkansas leading the way with 35.2% of households that are cell phone only. On the other end of the spectrum are New Jersey and Rhode Island where only 12.8% of households are cell phone only households. That explains why the cast of Jersey Shore still uses a duck phone as a landline.
States with a high percentage of low income households, renters, and young adults are most likely to have high amounts of cell phone only households. However, even if a household has a landline, it is often no longer the primary means of communication. In Texas, wireless phones are now the primary means of receiving phone calls in 52.6% of homes.
The trend away from landline phones is likely to continue unless there is some kind of new advantage or service that a landline phone can provide. So, soon we may not even see Snookie using the duck phone on the Jersey Shore.
